Freesound aims to create a huge collaborative database of audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps, … released under Creative Commons licenses that allow their reuse. Freesound provides new and interesting ways of accessing these samples, allowing users to:
- browse the sounds in new ways using keywords, a “sounds-like” type of browsing and more
- upload and download sounds to and from the database, under the same creative commons license
- interact with fellow sound-artists!
We also aim to create an open database of sounds that can also be used for scientific research and be integrated in third party applications. Using the Freesound API researchers and developers can access Freesound content and retrieve meaningful sound information such as metadata, analysis files and the sounds themselves.
Tau Analyzer is a free program, which can help you to distinguish with reasonable accuracy the original studio-based CDs from poor quality fakes, that have been “reconstructed” using a lossy audio source, such as mp3. Using this program you can check the authenticity of your purchased or borrowed music CDs.
Tau Analyzer features an intuitive user interface, allowing users to work directly with audio CDs, and has some additional functions such as spectrum and frequency analyzers, ATIP and ISRC data readers, etc.
Mp3Wrap is a free and independent alternative to AlbumWrap. It’s a command-line utility that quickly wraps two or more mp3 files into one single large playable mp3, without losing filenames and ID3 information (and without decoding or encoding). It’s also possible to include other non mp3 files, such as playlists, info files and cover images inside the new mp3. You can easily produce a large mp3 file that you can split at any time by using mp3splt and in few seconds you’ll have all the original files again! It’s useful because files created with Mp3Wrap are much easier to share.

The AcousticBrainz project aims to crowd source acoustic information for all music in the world and to make it available to the public. This acoustic information describes the acoustic characteristics of music and includes low-level spectral information and information for genres, moods, keys, scales and much more. The goal of AcousticBrainz is to provide music technology researchers and open source hackers with a massive database of information about music. ~ AcousticBrainz
